Beach Fishing at Lover’s Key State Park

Beach FishingA few times during season the club offers the opportunity for both new and experienced anglers to enjoy a half day excursion of beach fishing at Lover’s Key State Park.  We fish along the park’s northern beach area which has a variety of habitat supporting fish that travel through Big Carlos Bay.  There is always a moving tide and it is common to see local captains on bay boats drifting in this large inlet.  Snook, Sea Trout, Jack Cravelle, Whiting, and Spanish Mackerel have all been part of the catch and release experience at the beach.

We usually meet no later than about 9:00 AM in the gravel parking lot that is located immediately before the bridge to Big Carlos Pass on the (west) left side – about a mile north of the main entrance to Lover’s key Park on Estero Blvd.  There is a small per visitor donation fee ($3) and collection box at the site.  Residents 65 or older do not require a fishing license and a free Shoreline Saltwater fishing license is available to all Florida Residents. The event is free and the club provides live shrimp.

Members are asked to bring a spinning reel/rod (e.g., 7′ MH rod w/3000 series reel w/10-15 lb. braid plus a few yards of 25 lb. fluorocarbon leader), 2-3 popping corks, a few jig heads (3/8 to 1/2 oz),  some 1/o or 2/o circle hooks, a small bait bucket (if you have one), sun screen, polarized glasses, and water shoes. You can also bring a light sand chair and/or rod holder.  However, packing light makes it easier to walk the full range of this beautiful beach.
